Gloria Bomar Martinson

Gloria Bomar Martinson passed away at St. Catherine’s Village in Madison, MS on October 15, 2019 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born in Metairie, LA, on May 27, 1929 , only daughter of Leon Picard and Thelma Tschirn Bomar. She attended Dominican High School in New Orleans and later LSU. In the the late 1940's, she moved to Northeast Jackson to help with the family business, Bomar's Shoes on Capital Street.  On May 25, 1950 she married Frank Maynard Martinson Jr (Mike) in a beautiful Nuptial Mass at St. Peter's Cathedral in downtown Jackson celebrated by Mikes’ uncle, Father Harvey Rockwood.

Gloria and Mike were charter members of St. Richards Catholic Church where Gloria was a daily communicant. Gloria was a wonderful wife and mother, she often opened her home and entertained with her husband many of his business clients from Miss Americas to Governors. She was an organic gardener and spent many happy hours gardening with her sister -in-law, Rita Martinson. She also was a Certified Gemologist and a Gift Buyer for Albriton’s Jewelers where she retired after over twenty years. 

Then in 1989, from her kitchen table, Gloria started the nonprofit organization Gleaners. Gleaners collects and salvages food and redistributes it to organizations that help feed families struggling with hunger. In 2001, Gloria was honored as one of Mississippi’s Ageless Heroes.

Gloria spent many of her happiest years surrounded by her many friends at St. Catherine's Village. At St Catherine's Village she attended Mass daily. She was also on the bowling team, the croquet team and cooked her famous banana bread!

Gloria was preceded in death by her husband of more than 40 years as well as her two brothers, Leon P.Bomar Jr and Edward Bomar.

She is survived by her two daughters, Nicki Martinson Boland (Pat) and Debra Martinson Pearsall (Denny) grand children: Gracie and Mike Boland and Lauren Lorraine Sinclair (Dave); Great grand children: Sterling and Isabella Sinclair and Brother- In -Law Billy Martinson (Rita) nieces: Ginny Martinson Weilenman (Mark) Karen Martinson Mckiee, (Maur) Kathi Bomar, Mandy Bomar Townsend and Tammy Bomar Nephews: Chip Martinson (Susan Spicer) and Allen Martinson (Mimi) Frank Sanchez (Janet) Blanchard Sanchez and Bill Sanchez (Kim).
