Around 11:30 pm, January 30, a vehicle racing up Old Canton in Fondren plowed down a stretch of traffic cones. The cones had been in place for weeks, as this stretch of Old Canton is being resurfaced.
Most cones were ripped from their bases and flattened, to certainly be replaced at taxpayers' expense. The mayor's office and Councilwoman Virgie Lindsay have been provided with pictures and an account of the incident.
Speeding has been a growing concern along Old Canton for some time, particularly the stretch south of Avondale as motorists approach the popular business district. With the new, smooth asphalt surface, there are no longer the familiar craters and potholes to slow traffic.
There has been hope that the city would implement some type of traffic control devices to limit speeds and increase safety in the neighborhood.
