Immediately on Ridgewood Road, Northeast Jackson faces a blight problem in a commercial area.
In Northeast Jackson, nearly immediately to the north of the intersection of Beasley and Ridgewood Road, there is an abandoned building, just north of Edo shushi restaurant and across from Scrooge's restaurant.
Garbage is being illegally dumped behind the building in an unsanitary giant pile in a paved parking lot space where a dumpster should have originally been located. The building looks burned out and has trash in a giant pile on the property line next to the Park at Inverness Apartments.
Every weekday during the school year, multiple school buses go to the Park at Inverness Apartments and nearby apartment and rental home multi-unit complexes. The area has many rental homes and apartment units next to occupied businesses and other vacant buildings.
Nearby, Brookshire's grocery store, which later became Virginia College in 2011, closed and then was occupied by Virginia College. The building subsequently was vacated in 2019 and has remained unoccupied ever since. The abandoned building has attracted vagrants and looters and has become an eyesore.
