Rankin Ear, Nose & Throat provides specialized care for both adults and children with ear, nose, and throat issues. Although a primary care physician can manage many ENT conditions, some cases benefit from the focused expertise and ongoing care of an ENT specialist.
The Rankin clinic is led by Dr. Alex de Gruy and Dr. Elizabeth Schimmel. Both are board-certified otolaryngologists with extensive experience and strong ties to the local community. Dr. de Gruy, a Jackson native, received his medical degree and completed his residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He believes in collaborating with patients to achieve the best possible results and is fluent in Spanish.
Also from Jackson, Dr. Schimmel attended college in Massachusetts before returning to the University of Mississippi Medical School. She then completed her residency at Oregon Health & Science University. After practicing in Oregon for three years, she returned to Mississippi to be closer to family.
Otolaryngology encompasses a wide range of areas, including hearing, speech, smell, breathing, and voice. Dr. de Gruy and Dr. Schimmel enjoy treating diverse conditions related to breathing, voice, hearing, smell, taste, and balance, and are dedicated to improving their patients’ quality of life.
While many patients think they need a referral to see an ENT, self-referrals are welcome. Dr. de Gruy and Dr. Schimmel stress that treatment is customized for each patient. Surgery may be necessary for some, but both doctors collaborate with patients to create a treatment plan.
Dr. de Gruy says he chose otolaryngology “because I like being able to treat patients from newborn to the 100s,” and he enjoys the broad spectrum of conditions they address. Dr. Schimmel believes in “treating her patients like family” and “using my skills and knowledge to help them.”
