The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of the Central Mississippi Area (NCADD) has been a cornerstone in the fight against substance use disorders across the state for decades. Located in the heart of the state capital, NCADD Central Mississippi provides critical services that support individuals and families affected by addiction.
The roots of our organization trace back to 1944 when Marty Mann, one of the first women to achieve sobriety through Alcoholics Anonymous, founded the National Committee for Education on Alcoholism (NCEA). This pioneering effort later became National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) to reflect a broader focus on drug-related issues. Inspired by Mann’s mission, volunteers in Mississippi sought to bring the organization’s vision to life by becoming official affiliates.
Today, NCADD Central Mississippi dedicates over 50 percent of our efforts to serving underserved communities across Mississippi. Our organization’s mission is to increase public awareness, provide education, and advocate for effective prevention, treatment, and recovery services. These services aim to support individuals and communities on their journey to hope, health and healing.
“Substance use disorder is a treatable disease, rather than a moral failing. The road to recovery takes a village. Whether providing tools, resources, or words of encouragement, we remain ready to serve,” states Executive Director Ashley Smith. As a trusted resource in the prevention, treatment referral, and harm reduction space, NCADD continues to lead with heart and purpose.
Though headquartered in Jackson, NCADD’s impact extends statewide reaching into schools, neighborhoods, and churches with grassroots outreach and harm reduction programs. Our efforts are made possible through state and federal grants, the generosity of donors, and annual fundraising events.
One of our largest events is A Night of Honor, held each September during National Recovery Month. The event highlights personal stories of recovery, recognizes advocates, and celebrates the strength of Mississippi’s recovery community.
This year’s event takes place on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at the Mississippi Museum of Art. The evening will feature a keynote address from renowned chef and television host Andrew Zimmern, with dinner prepared by Mississippi’s own Chef Nick Wallace, and live entertainment for attendees to enjoy.
