The City of Gluckstadt is now accepting bids for the construction of its police station and municipal courts building.
The two-acre piece of land for the building was secured at the end of 2022 after developer Anthony Morrison sold one acre of the land at his cost and donated the second acre at no cost to the city. The land is located near the Germantown High football field.
Mayor Walter Morrison said they hope to start construction on the building by mid-June after they accept a bid.
“I expect it to take at least a year to build the building, however, understand that we have not yet received bids, so I am speculating as to the timeline of all this,” Morrison said.
Once opened, the building will house the police department and municipal court and all associated support staff. Currently, the police department and municipal court is located at the city hall.
“The largest department in the city is the police department, so this will allow them the room to do their work and continue to grow,” Morrison said. “It also allows the rest of the city staff room to do their work as well. Right now, all of the city government operates out of city hall, which is completely full at this time.”
During 2022, state legislation allocated the city $1 million to Gluckstadt’s police department, which will go entirely towards building the police station. Morrison said the total cost of the project is presently unknown until bids are received.
“I suspect that at least a portion of the building will be funded through an issue of general obligation bonds,” Morrison said.
Bids are due on May 4 and will be open and read on May 9.
