Spillway Recreation Area to close Saturday for 4th annual Operation Clean Sweep
Barnett Reservoir officials will close the Spillway Recreation Area on both sides of the Pearl River below the dam at 4 a.m. Saturday morning to facilitate the 4th annual Operation Clean Sweep. Only volunteers participating in the project will be allowed through the gates.
The west side of the tailrace is expected to reopen to fishing and other recreation as volunteers finish cleaning the riprap and parking lot areas. Workers will then move to the east side, which will also serve as the trash collection site for the entire sweep of the reservoir area. The west side will remain closed through Sunday.
Organized by Pearl Riverkeeper Abby Braman, Operation Clean Sweep is a river-long, two-state clean-up operation that has removed over 100,000 pounds of trash from the Pearl River since 2017. The Mississippi sweep will be conducted Saturday and the Louisiana will be on Sept. 26.
Keep the Reservoir Beautiful, a private conservation group, and the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District, the state agency that operates the 33,000-acre Barnett Reservoir, are local sponsors assisting around the lake. For more information on Operation Clean Sweep, visit:
