Rumors have circulated for years that the old power plant out on Highway 82 in Greenville was going to shut down, and eventually those rumors will be right.
Late Monday evening Entergy Mississippi, made an official statement that The Greenville power plant will be replaced with a more modern, energy-efficient natural gas power plant.
A spokeswoman for Entergy Mississippi said, “Throughout our 100-year history, we have invested in generation plants that allow us to produce power as efficiently as possible with the most advanced technology available.
As power generation technology has evolved, we have built, purchased, and retired plants as necessary to meet the demand for ever-cleaner solutions while keeping costs low.
With that in mind, the current plans are to retire the Gerald Andrus plant in 2028.
The spokeswoman continued, “Amazon Web Services recently announced it will locate two data center campuses in Mississippi, which will drive significant power grid infrastructure improvements across our service area, while also helping maintain affordable rates for our customers.
The investments related to the AWS project will benefit counties close to generation investments, with a focus on the Mississippi Delta and northwest Mississippi.
New and efficient natural gas power generation will align with the retirement of older, less efficient power generation.”
The statement ended with a promise to share more details about future power generation investments.
