Opera Mississippi, in collaboration with Mississippi College, proudly presents The Christmas Gift—a luminous holiday stage work by beloved composer, clarinetist, and longtime Mississippi College professor Dr. James S. Sclater. Performances will take place Friday, December 12, at 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, December 13, at 3:00 p.m., in the JPW Recital Hall on the Mississippi College campus. As a special prelude to opening night, Dr. Sclater will deliver a short talk about the creation of the opera at 6:15 p.m., offering guests a unique glimpse into his creative process and inspiration.
More than a performance, The Christmas Gift stands as a homecoming and heartfelt tribute to Dr. Sclater’s extraordinary impact on the College, its students, and the broader Mississippi arts community. For over four decades, Dr. Sclater’s music and mentorship have shaped generations of musicians, scholars, and educators. His work, marked by lyricism, integrity, and emotional depth, continues to reflect the values that define Mississippi College: excellence, faith, and service through the arts.
Set in a humble 19th-century Spanish village, The Christmas Gift tells a timeless story of faith, compassion, and the power of selfless giving. When two brothers realize they have no gift to bring to the altar on Christmas Eve, their moment of disappointment transforms into a revelation—the greatest gift is one born of love and sacrifice. Dr. Sclater’s moving score captures the warmth and humanity of the story, reminding audiences of the light that shines most brightly through kindness.
Under the baton of Dr. Jay Dean (Music Director and Conductor), with Carroll Freeman (Stage Director) and a company of acclaimed professional vocalists and instrumentalists, The Christmas Gift will be a deeply moving collaboration between students and seasoned artists. This partnership exemplifies Mississippi College’s enduring commitment to bridging artistry and education, providing students the rare opportunity to learn and perform alongside professionals at the highest level.
For alumni, donors, and friends of the College, this event is an invitation to celebrate the enduring legacy of one of Mississippi’s most influential musical voices. It is a chance to reconnect with the community that has long made Mississippi College a home for faith-inspired artistry and academic excellence.
Join Opera Mississippi and Mississippi College this December for The Christmas Gift—a musical testament to the joy of giving, the beauty of collaboration, and the legacy of a teacher whose influence continues to resonate in hearts and concert halls alike.
