An office building on Ridgewood Road with a façade that already looks like it could be apartments is expected to be converted to multi-family apartments.
The Jackson City Council gave the go-ahead for the project on Aug. 19.
The council on a 5-0 vote granted Capitol Magnolia LLC a use permit to convert the office building at 2625-2639 Ridgewood Road into up to 20 apartment units. The office building is located at Ridgewood Road and Lelia Drive, which is south of Lakeland Drive.
The Planning Board recommended the use permit be granted for the conversion of the building that is located in an area zoned C-2 commercial.
Justin Peterson, president of State Street Group, told the council that there are smaller offices on Ridgewood Road, Crane Ridge Drive and along Lelia Drive and high-quality apartments meet market demand in the area and harmonize with the other offices.
State Street Group developed The Quarter House, a 138-unit apartment complex that is located behind the Quarter shopping center. The Quarter House can easily be seen from the office building that State Street Group wants to convert to living spaces.
Ashby Foote, who represents Ward 1 on the council, said he believes there’s more of a demand for high-end apartments than office space. “It’s a good location,” he said.
He also believes that the converted apartments will be attractive to medical professionals and medical students at nearby hospitals and offices.
