Flood control madness

The Mississippi River crested over nine feet above flood stage at Natchez on March 17 — higher than the epic 1927 flood which put the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the flood control business. The 2011 crest was even higher. Four of the five highest floods have happened since 2008.







One more thing

On this, the last day of our cruise through China and Japan, Edrie Royals and I stepped from an elevator of one of the tallest buildings in Tokyo. We’d had a wonderful trip to Hong Kong and several islands in the South China Sea and were now in Japan, almost ready to wing our way home.

If we were giving gold medals for columns, long-time columnist Felder Rushing would deserve one for a perceptive, heart-felt and appreciative column which he called “A Tribute in Yellow” about the life and work of Halla Jo Ellis, who lived quietly a full lifetime of 90 years.
