Spinners Family Entertainment is making plans to occupy the building at 1187 E. County Line Rd. that once housed Academy Sports.
Academy Sports closed the Jackson location when it opened a new, larger location in Madison in 2018 and the building has not had a long-term tenant since then.
The Jackson City Council on Sept. 19 approved the Jackson Planning Board recommendation to grant a conditional use permit that will allow the family entertainment center to operate in a C-3 (General) Commercial District.
Spinners operates a location in Florence where it offers bowling, skating and a game arcade.
The council also went along with the planning board’s recommendation that property at 2095 Dunbarton Dr. near the southeast corner of Dunbarton Street and River Ridge Street, be rezoned from C-2 (Limited Commercial District) to C-3 (General Commercial District). River Ridge LLC and Riverview Properties LLC own the two-story office building that has housed a variety of private and government offices during the last 40 years, but is now vacant and has fallen into disrepair, according to the application for zoning action. Plans are to demolish the building after the property is rezoned to help clean up the area and better market it, according to the application.
The city of Jackson Future Land Use Plan calls for the neighborhood’s continued growth as a non-retail commercial property, according to the application. This proposed changed from C-2 to C-3 is consistent with the City’s Future Land Use Plan and will create an opportunity to clean up the existing land and provide opportunity for new high-quality development, according to the application.
