JACKSON, Miss. - Hinds County District Attorney, Jody E. Owens, II, announces the successful prosecution of Maurice Lipsey who, following a jury trial, was convicted of Second Degree Murder in the 2021 shooting death of 36-year-old Leonardo Wilson; and, for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Lipsey was previously convicted for possession of cocaine.
On September 2, 2021, officers responded to Washington and Craft Street in reference to a shooting, where they identified Wilson who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the body. The victim was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Officers reported that the suspect fled the scene.
The trial court sentenced Lipsey to 25 years for murder and to 10 years for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; both sentences are to be served in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
“All this senseless violence must stop,” District Attorney Jody Owens said following the verdict. “We hope this conviction will give some closure to the victim’s family.”
