The Madison County Board of Supervisors heard from engineers for numerous road projects that are underway during its April 21 meeting.
Tim Bryant, Madison County engineer, said the supervisors requested that engineers for the various road projects underway provide updates every quarter about the work that has been done and will be done.
He said the purpose is “to make sure the public understand we are committed to doing this in a timely manner.”
The projects the supervisors received updates about are part of a $250 million, long-term transportation plan the board approved last May. The majority of the projects are road widenings meant to help alleviate traffic congestion.
Among the projects discussed were:
- Calhoun Station Parkway
The topographical survey, the geotechnical survey and conceptual design have been completed for a two-mile project to widen from two lanes to four lanes Calhoun Station Parkway from Stout Road to Mississippi Highway 22.
The completed bid package and work on acquiring applicable permits should be completed by July 21, which is when the board has scheduled another update from engineers.
- Stribling Road from Highway 463 to Dewees Road
The environmental report is substantially complete and awaiting completion of the updated preliminary roadway design information. Existing utilities have been marked and survey and in-person meetings with utility companies are scheduled in the coming weeks.
Analysis of traffic supports a five-lane section east of McMillon Road and a three-lane section west of McMillon Road. Intersection improvements at Camden Crossing such as a traffic signal or roundabout are warranted.
The geotechnical draft report has been completed and shows unsuitable material such as Yazoo clay present throughout the entire segment east of McMillon Road and unsuitable material in isolated locations west of McMillon Road.
- Stribling Road improvements from Dewees Road to Catlett Road at Red Fox Lane
The topographic survey/property map has been completed and conceptual plans are 90 percent complete.
Conceptual plans were expected to be submitted by April 25 for Madison County to review. Field inspection plans should start in May and the traffic study and soil testing should begin in the second quarter of the year.
- Weisenberger Road from U.S. Highway 51 to Parkway East
The field study has been completed and the hydraulic survey is ongoing as is the environmental assessment. The conceptual design is being finalized, and coordination is ongoing with Canadian National Railroad regarding impact to the rail crossing. Ten utilities will be impacted by the project, which is just 7/10 of a mile in length..
The environmental assessment should be completed by June 2026 and the design should be completed by September 2027.
The project is to five-lane Weisenberger Road from U.S. Highway 51 to Parkway East.
- Yandell Road from U.S. Highway 51 to Smith Carr Road and Smith Carr Road to North Old Canton Road
The topographic mapping and the utility survey have been completed. Also completed is the initial resource agency consultation and the cultural resource survey.
Additional studies necessary for the work are planned before the next reporting period to the supervisors. Work will continue on the field review plans, which are about 60 percent complete.
The final design is expected by the end of 2026, with construction starting in 2027 and taking about two years.
-Yandell Road West Segment
Topographic mapping and the utility survey are complete. The initial resource agency consultation has been completed and so has the cultural resource survey, which has been submitted to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History for concurrence.
Additional reports that are necessary will be completed before the next reporting period to the supervisors. Work on the field review plans continues and is about 60 percent complete.
-Yandell Road signal installation at North Old Canton Road
The survey work is complete and bridge geotechnical reports are complete. Bridge hydraulics are about 90 percent done.
In the upcoming quarter, the environmental phase of the project will begin. The design and plan production of the bridge plans will continue. Work will continue on the field review plans on a portion of the project.
