First Presbyterian Day School (FPDS) recently announced the appointment of Mary Elizabeth Ferriss as First Presbyterian Day School’s next upper school principal, beginning summer 2026.
Ferriss previously served on faculty for 11 years and brings nearly two decades of experience in Christian education. She holds a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Belhaven University and a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction from the University of Mississippi.
Over the past 18 years, she has taught grades one through four, led curriculum development initiatives, strengthened vertical alignment efforts, and implemented data-driven strategies to support student achievement and academic growth.
In 2021, Ferriss joined The Covenant School in Nashville, where she continued her work in Christian education while deepening her commitment to partnering with families and supporting faculty. Throughout her career, she has remained focused on nurturing students academically and spiritually, keeping Christ at the center of her leadership.
“I am so humbled and excited to come back home to FPDS and step into the role of upper school principal,” said Ferriss. “The Day School is where I learned what a true Christian education looks like, and my husband, David, and I are thrilled to have our own two children’s hearts and minds shaped and formed by the incredible community here. It is my prayer that the Lord will use this role to continue to plant seeds of Christlikeness, pursue excellence in academics, and prepare students for kingdom service.”
Jennifer Dryden, current upper school principal, will continue serving through the summer and into the start of the 2026–2027 school year.
“We are confident that the Lord has faithfully guided this decision,” said FPDS Head of School Jonathan Lancaster. “Mary Elizabeth’s experience, leadership, and heartfelt commitment to Christian education make her uniquely equipped to shepherd our Upper School.”
