Approximately 10 states will be represented with participants in the 2018 Flying Scot Wife-Husband Regatta.
The annual national-level competition will come to the Ross Barnett Reservoir October 26-28. The event is hosted by the Jackson Yacht Club and Community Sailing on the Rez.
“This is a national-level sailing event that travels all over the country,” said Regatta Chairman Jim Leggette. “It’s unique because you have to be a husband or wife. Think about it like a mixed-doubles event.”
The sailors will be sailing in a type of boat known as the Flying Scot.
According to event officials, since all of these 19-foot boats are the same, the racing becomes a true test of sailing skill and teamwork.
In addition to the high level of competition, many of the sailors will travel all over the country to enjoy the camaraderie and friendships that have evolved over the years.
Some sailors have gone on from the Flying Scot to win world championships in other types of boats or been involved with America’s Cup campaigns.
“It’s the only event like it in sailing,” Leggette said.
Many of these sailors have won national-level championships.
Officials are expecting over 30 boats from all over the country. Sailors from Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Wisconsin, South Carolina, Virginia and Massachusetts are traveling in to take part.
So far, two Northside couples have signed up to compete, Robert Muller and Margaret King of Madison and Robert Wise and Suzanne Sharpe Wise of Jackson.
Those who attend will be able to enjoy food, drinks and live music in addition to the sailing competition. The deadline to sign up is Friday, October 26.
Awards will be given to the top five finishers in each division. Awards will also be given for Championship Division first, Ted and Florence Glass Trophy; Challenger Division first, Cal and Anita Hudson Trophy; Best finish by spouses whose combined age equals or exceeds 100, Eric and Mary Amman Trophy.
Additional prizes will be awarded as well.
Five races are scheduled. No more than three races will be held on any day.
Leggette said the event will be a great way for the area to highlight what an asset the reservoir is.
“Another interesting aspect is that sailing is one of the things that you don’t have to be a certain age to do. People of all ages and genders can enjoy,” Leggette said. “You will see a mix of ages. The real appeal is multigenerational.”
