John Lawrence Mason Sr. died Monday, March 24, 2025, at Plainview Assisted Living. A funeral service was held Thursday, March 27, 2025 at Madison Methodist Church. Graveside service followed at Crestview Memorial Gardens in Brandon.
Mr. Mason was born on August 17, 1936 in Memphis, the son of the late Lawrence and Montaree Mason. Raised in Marshall County, he graduated from Byhalia High School. A lifelong Mississippi State fan, Mr. Mason earned his bachelor of science degree in engineering. After graduating from Mississippi State University, he made his home in Jackson. Upon retirement, he and his wife moved to Madison.
He served his country in the United States Air Force Reserve for six years where he received his honorable discharge.
Mason worked over 27 years as a civil engineer with the Department of Transportation. He obtained the designation of professional engineer with the State of Mississippi. After retirement he began his own business as an independent contractor. He took pride in his 32 years of building houses and the many renovations of houses and businesses.
A faithful Christian, he was an active member of Madison Methodist Church. He previously was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church and Wesley United Methodist Church where he taught youth Sunday School and was on the administration board and the trustees. He was also an active mentor for confirmation classes.
Mason coached Little League and minor league baseball, winning numerous championships and was a mentor to many young ball players throughout the years.
He loved Mississippi State athletics and was a member of the Bulldog Club. Mason enjoyed listening to music and attending live concerts. Most of all he cherished spending time with his family and his fur babies.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret Mason of Madison; daughter, Sharon Mason Womack and her husband Scott of Brandon; son, Dr. John Lawrence Mason Jr. and his wife Ginger of Meridian; grandchildren, Kelli Langford and her husband Justin of Brandon; Harris Mason of Meridian and Rachel Mason of Meridian; Steven Womack and his wife Ally of Florence; Phillip Womack and his wife Kalli of Mendenhall; Jennifer Hand and her husband Kevin of Moss Point; great-grandchildren, Emory Langford, Lake Langford, Riley Womack, Evie Payne, Bradlee Hand and Lainey Hand. Also, Richard Harris Jr. and his wife Clare of Tennessee and numerous other loving family and friends.
