In response to Greta Mill’s letter entitled “Vaccinated can spread Omicron,” I’m perplexed that she completely missed the central point of vaccination. Vaccination is meant to prevent or significantly reduce the effects of deadly disease. For example, smallpox vaccines completely eradicated smallpox. Flu vaccines prevent or significantly reduce side effects and deaths from flu.
Ms. Mills quotes reputable sources correctly stating that some vaccinated Americans are getting COVID and can spread it, but incorrectly surmises on her own that the vaccine is therefore not working. COVID is a new virus that is constantly mutating with more contagious strains, so of course, some vaccinated people will contract it. The unstated and essential point is that vaccinated Americans with break-through COVID are rarely going to the hospital or dying, no matter which mutation they contract. That is the point of getting the vaccine: to prevent or reduce the severity in those who do test positive.
The COVID vaccines have more than 20 years of research invested in them and are extremely effective, as noted by the overwhelming data that unvaccinated Americans are 11 to 14 times more likely to contract the illness and far more likely to die after getting it. The COVID vaccine does what vaccines are meant to do: prevent or significantly reduce the effects of illness and death. Americans who have had one, two or three shots are progressively better protected from dying, from experiencing the horrors of hospital treatment or suffering from long-term COVID. Each shot provides more protection. Unvaccinated Americans are vastly more at risk for disability and death this winter, just as President Biden said. They have and will continue to die in droves.
Finally, Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker, mentioned in the letter as triple vaccinated senators who tested positive for break-through COVID, experienced very mild symptoms. They didn’t suffer painfully in a hospital, resign their positions due to long-term disability or die. Again, just as with all immunizations, that is the point of the COVID vaccination.
