I just wanted to correct a comment you attributed to me. I am not opposed to gates in all instances. I do have a problem when city policy caters to the needs of the politically and economically powerful and does not provide explicit protections to those who are not. I have no squabble if someone purchases a home in a gated community, places a gate where there is a single entrance with enough turnaround space, or a gate calms traffic without displacing that traffic to other streets. There are circumstances where I do not oppose the erection of a gate.
Where I do have concerns is groups forming homeowner associations that in effect are gerrymandering areas that were once considered one neighborhood.
I also have concerns about gates being placed without consideration to the homeowners whose property is directly outside the gate. I am worried about gates bisecting football length streets. I have concerns about those who purchase their homes and then find themselves with a gate placed adjacent or within eyesight. I am also dismayed when I hear someone happily and proudly tell me that the original gate ordinance will allow for gates all over Northeast Jackson…the more the better. Really? I have concerns when gates are placed on major streets that are direct routes for ambulance, fire, and police services to other residents outside the gates.
You took me out of context for a punchline. You thought it was funny and I am sure so did some of your readers. But, you are right I do think a sense of community is worth speaking up for…as far as I can tell Jackson for years has been fighting for its soul and in many points in its history has nearly lost it.
