Mary O’Connor Cobb died peacefully at home on December 1, 2022. Mary was born in 1930 in waterloo, Iowa, a daughter of Dr. James A. and Geraldine Mckinis O’Connor. She attended Rosary College (Dominican University) in River Forest, Illinois and was a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University with a B.S. in Nursing.
While at Johns Hopkins she met Alton B. Cobb of Camden, Mississippi and they married in September of 1954. They then settled in Jackson, Mississippi where they both dedicated their lives to Public Health through the Mississippi State Board of Health. Mary was employed for 23 years as a public health nurse doing follow-up of high risk infants born at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Mary served as a Girl Scout leader and enjoyed swimming, weaving and tree farming. She was active in Catholic Charities, The Good Samaritan Center and St. Richard’s Catholic Church where she attended daily morning mass until health conditions limited her participation.
Preceded in death by her parents, husband, her sister and one brother, she is survived by her brother Paul O’Connor (Joyce) of Rim Rock, Arizona. She is survived by her children, Mary Al Alford (Tim), Dr. Tommy Cobb (Laura Lea), and Susan Cobb (Dave Heidenthal). Also her surviving grandchildren include, Timothy Alford (Mary Bruce), Leah Hendrix (Tal), John Paul Alford (Jana); Jenny Sneed (Will), Lauren Steele (David), Cameron Cobb (Tillery); Scott Jimenez (Julia), Sara Burns (John), Mary Grace Suggs (John); and nineteen great-grandchildren. Ama’s greatest joy was that her grandchildren were all very close to one another and such good friends.
