Get ready to refresh the supply of school uniforms and tennis shoes: The start of school is just around the corner.
Russ Nelson, interim principal at St. Richard Catholic School in Jackson, believes by this time of the year parents and students are ready to get back to the classroom.
“They’re ready to get back into the routine,” he said. “They get bored when they’re off. Students are ready to learn something new.”
Worth noting, at least two schools in the metro area have expanded the grades they offer. Christ Covenant School in Ridgeland will offer the eleventh grade for the first time this school year and Revive Collegiate School in Jackson will offer third grade for the first time.
Kicking off the 2024-2025 academic year the earliest is the Madison County School District. That has been the typical pattern for several years.
Students in Madison County Schools will head back on Aug. 1 for the first day of classes. All students in grades 1-12 report on that day.
The Madison County School District kindergarten students will have a soft start, with students whose last names start with A-L attending class on Aug. 1 and students whose last names start with M-Z attending class on Aug. 2. All kindergarten students will be in class together on Aug. 5.
Revive Collegiate at 5301 Old Canton Road will have Back to School Night to which parents and students are invited on July 31 at 5 p.m. Aug. 5 will be the first day of school for all students (kindergarten through third grade) at Revive Collegiate.
Aug. 5 will also be the first day of classes for all Jackson Public Schools students.
All JPS students, new and returning, must enroll through the PowerSchool Enrollment Portal. Enrollment can be completed at any time, day or night, and parents can enroll multiple students without having to complete the entire process for each child. Returning students must have a SnapCode to complete the registration.

The majority of schools in the area will start classes on Aug. 8.
Christ Covenant School has scheduled a back to school event for all grades on Aug. 6 starting at 2:30 p.m. The first day of classes will be on Aug. 8.
Jackson Academy has scheduled new student receptions on Aug. 5.
The first day of school for students in the Upper School at JA will be Aug. 7, with the day extending from 8:30-11:45 a.m. Students in Kindergarten 2 through twelfth grade will have a full day of school on Aug. 8.
Jackson Prep Lower School students will have the chance to meet their teachers and classmates on Aug. 6 at their grade-level welcome parties. The Lower School will begin the year with a half-day of classes on Aug. 8.
The Jackson Prep Middle and Upper Schools will be on campus on Aug. 7 for Back-to-School PREP Day, where students will receive new school I.D. cards, schedules for the new school year and locker assignments. Students will also have the opportunity to catch up with classmates, visit the school supply store sponsored by the student council, attend grade-specific orientations, purchase items from the Patriot Shop and get a cool treat from the Kona Ice truck.
The first day of school for the Middle and Upper Schools at Prep, and the first full day for the Lower School, will be Aug. 9. Meet the Patriots is scheduled on Aug. 13 in the school gym.
St. Joseph Catholic School students will return to class on Aug. 8 at 8 a.m. All students will start the day in the gym. The Class of 2025 will celebrate its last “First Day of School” with breakfast on the Senior Deck from 7:15-7:45 a.m.
St. Richard Catholic School will welcome new families with a social from 6-8 p.m. on July 26 that will be off campus. Back-to-School Afternoon is scheduled from 2-4:30 p.m. on Aug. 4; students will meet their teachers and visit their classrooms for 30 minutes and then parents will meet with the principal and the teachers. Childcare will be provided.
The first day of classes at St. Richard will be on Aug. 8.
Students and parents at St. Anthony Catholic School in Madison are invited to attend a “There’s No Place Like STA” back-to-school event on Aug. 6 from 4-6 p.m. Students and parents will get to meet the teachers and tour the classrooms.
All students (K4 through sixth grade) at St. Anthony Catholic School in Madison will begin the 2024-2025 year on Aug. 8.
First Presbyterian Day School in Jackson will open the school year with a campus prayer walk on Aug. 3. Back to School Night for the Early Childhood program through K5 is scheduled on Aug. 6. The Uniform Swap Store and the Crusader Clothing Co. store will be open on Aug. 7 from 8 a.m. until noon.
Parents and students will have the opportunity to meet the teachers on Aug. 7. The first full day of classes, which will include lunch and after-school care, will be on Aug. 8.
Back to School Night for first through sixth grade at First Presbyterian is scheduled on Aug. 13. A Crusader Party, hosted by the Crusader Club at the home of Charlotte and Richard McNeel, is scheduled on Aug. 24.
At Madison-Ridgeland Academy, orientation for new students in grades sixth through twelfth will take place on Aug. 7 in Duease Hall. New students in sixth through eighth grades will have orientation from 8:30-9:30 a.m.; new students in tenth through twelfth grades, 11 a.m. until noon; and new students in ninth grade from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
The first full day of school for MRA students in K3 through fifth grade will be Aug. 9.
Meet the Patriots is set for Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. at the football stadium.
Back to School Night for elementary grades at MRA is scheduled on Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. at Duease Hall. Back to School Night for the High School is scheduled on Aug. 20 from 6-7:30 p.m. in Duease Hall and the Back to School Night for grades six through eight is scheduled on Aug. 21 from 6-7:30 p.m. in Duease Hall. Kindergarten Back to School Night is Aug. 26 at 6 p.m. in the kindergarten building.
St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is welcoming new Middle and Upper School students for orientations on Aug. 12. All Lower School students will return to campus for Meet the Teacher on the morning of Aug.13 when they will visit their classrooms, homeroom teachers and reconnect with classmates. The first day of school for grades Pre-K3 through Grade 12 is Aug. 14.
The Class of 2025 will celebrate its “Last First Day” with a special gathering before school hosted by the St. Andrew’s Parents’ Association.
