The Madison Public Library and Ridgeland Public Library will be offering special programs for the month of February in addition to their regular programs, including some Valentine’s Day themed programs.
For Valentine’s Day at the Madison library, there will be a Valentine Popper Kit craft that can be picked up at the library starting Feb. 1 through Feb. 14. You can also include the library as one of your Valentines by participating in National Library Lovers Month – you can tell the library what you love about them, pick up a sweet treat and register for a special giveaway. Storytime Stars will have a Love and Valentine’s theme on Feb. 8 with other themes for the month being Groundhog Day, Football and Twosday. On Valentine’s Day, the Teen Game Time will be Valentine’s styled minute-to-win-it games.
In addition to Valentine’s Day, the month of February also includes National Embroidery Month and National Bird Feeding Month – both of which will be celebrated by the Madison Public Library. National Embroidery Month will be celebrated at the library by encouraging patrons to look through the library’s embroidery books, pick up a take-home DIY craft kit that will teach the basics of embroidery stitches, and register for the special embroidery gift giveaway.
Madison will provide take-home craft kits to teach patrons how to make a birdfeeder as well for National Bird Feeding Month. Patrons can also ask for information about participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count.
Popcorn Fridays will continue throughout the month with a free bag of popcorn with a checked out movie. This will extend also to Saturdays Feb. 12 and 26 with Family Movie Night on the Go. Madison families can pick out a movie for their movie night and receive a treat bag of goodies to snack on.
“There is so much to celebrate in February with Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, the Super Bowl, World Read Aloud Day and, of course, “Twosday” on 2/22/22,” Children’s Librarian Becky Bowen said. “Come join the fun at the Madison library with programs, craft kits, and more!”

Ridgeland will be celebrating Library Lovers Month all month long with Feel the LOVE at Your Library. They will be celebrating with an array of Valentine-themed programs, other fun programs and take-and-make kits. The library also wants to show its love for the community by hosting two giveaways. Patrons can come to the library and fill out an entry slip stating why they love the library and be entered to win one of two prizes. The first prize is a $25 gift card courtesy of Mangia Bene Restaurant Group to be used at Bravo!, Broad Street Bakery, or Sal & Mookies. Another winner will receive a Nicholas Sparks prize basket complete with his newest book The Wish. Drawings for the winners will be on Feb. 28.
“The National Library Lovers Month are the programs I am most excited for,” Ridgeland Library Branch Manager Kristen Hillman said. “ Library Lovers Month is a great month to show some love and support to your library by checking out books and DVDs, trying out some of our take-and-make craft and activity kits, or attending a program at your library.”
Last month’s “Learn a New Hobby Month” take-and-make kits were so popular, they decided to bring back a few new ones for February. On Feb. 3 from 4:30-5:30, patrons can join the crafters group for a fun, easy craft inspired by Library Lovers Month. The DIY tissue paper canvas that will be made will also be this week’s take-and-make craft available for pick-up at the circulation desk.
February is also home to Read in the Bathtub Day on Feb. 8, and, though the library reminds you not to take its books in the bathtub because they may get wet, the library will still be helping you celebrate with providing take home soap making kits with everything you’ll need except a small bar of your own soap.
Feb. 15 will be Get Crafty! Crochet Hearts edition from 4:30-5:30. Patrons can go and learn the basics of crocheting and create a simple crochet heart. It will also be that week’s take-and-make craft.
Hillman would also like to remind patrons of two ongoing programs. Every Wednesday at 10:30 is the start of Computer Hour for Adults. If you seem to be having an issue with a project or are trying to figure out the basics of computer usage, take advantage of this hour of assistance with basic computer use, Microsoft Word use or a current project.
Ridgeland will also be continuing Popcorn Fridays at the library.
“You check out a DVD – maximum is five DVDs per library card – on Friday and you get a bag of fresh, hot popcorn that we pop in-house at the library,” Hillman said.
