Plans for a new place to dine on East Fortification Street moved a step ahead after the Jackson City Council approved a conditional use permit.
Jackson City Council member Virgi Lindsay said she voted in favor of a conditional use permit, which allows a neighborhood restaurant to operate within a C-1A (Restricted) Commercial District, for the property located at 1012 E. Fortification St. Attorney Brad Reeves owns the property and sought the use permit.
“When we redid the comprehensive rezoning of Fortification Street in the early 2000s, this was the type of business we hoped would locate in this area,” Lindsay said. “It will be a reservations-only venue with a small number of tabletops.”
Zacchaeus Golden, a chef who operates Southern Soigne, intends to establish a reservations-only dining experience for small groups in a house that is near the headquarters of the Greater Belhaven Foundation.
Golden has trained at some of America’s top restaurants such as the legendary French Laundry, The Inn at Little Washington and minimalist food mecca Coi in San Francisco.
Casey Creasey, executive director of the Greater Belhaven Foundation, said Southern Soigne will be located about four houses away from the foundation’s headquarters.
“It’s a neat dinner concept with multiple courses and wine pairings,” she said. “You book ahead. It’s not one that where you can just show up.”
