The Madison County Board of Supervisors amended the 2025 funded Madison County Road Plan just a few weeks after adopting it.
McDonald Drive, Whisper Lake Boulevard, Whisper Lake Avenue, Woodland Hills Court, Sunflower Road, Iris Cove, Trey Cove and Devlin Extension were added to the list during the board’s March 17 meeting.
The estimate for adding the eight roads was $271,703, the cost of which is to be offset by removing Waterford Square and McDonald Road, which carried an estimated cost of $275,000, from the list.
The supervisors approved what’s known as the county’s funded road plan during their March 3 meeting.
The roads on the funded road plan first appeared on the county’s unfunded road plan. State law requires counties have an unfunded road plan that the supervisors have approved by their first meeting in February.
Roads on the funded road plan also include Ancient Oaks, Huntington Cove, Avonlea Lane, Lakeway Drive (west of Palin), Barnes Road, Lashonda Circle, Bear Creek Circle, Lewis Drive, Bear Creek Court, Livingston Road (striping), Bo Murphy Road, Mallard Pointe Drive, Bradshaw Drive, Bradshaw Crossing, McClellan Drive, Brennin Way, McDonald Lane, Bridgewater Drive, Brown Circle, McDougal Road, Camden Court, Morgan Road, Carmichael Boulevard and Old Agency Road (Patterson Crossing to Old Agency Parkway).
The plan also includes Camden Crossing (Stribling Road to the roundabout), Old Agency Road (ditch restoration/road protection), Carriage Lane, Old Agency Road (North Livingston Road to Patterson Crossing), Cedar Grove Lane, Old Highway 51, Centre Street, Old Jackson Road, Chantilly Drive, Perry Cove, Charleston Lane, Post Road (Rice Road to Yacht Club Road), Charleston Circle, Pot Luck Road, Cleo Lane, Priestley Street and Cloverleaf Drive.
Also on the funded road plan are Purvis Road, Coachman’s Place, Raytown Road, Coachman’s Road, Reunion Boulevard, Distribution Drive, Rocky Hill Road, Ercy Shell Road, Ross Road, First Street, Stillhouse Creek Drive, Gin Road, Stokes Road, Gobar
Road, Sumter Court, Harwood Court, Sycamore, Hawkins Thompson Lane, Tifton Drive, Honeysucker Road, Caroline Crossing (Camden Crossing to Hampton Crossing), Wells Court and Woods Crossing.
Tim Bryan, Madison County engineer, expects work to get underway this spring on the roads, with the bulk of the work being a new coat of asphalt. The temperature must be “50 degrees and rising” for asphalt to be applied, he said.
Adcamp Inc., which has the county’s term bid for paving, will handle some of the paving and the county road crew will also do some, he said.
Some of the road maintenance projects are in the cities of Canton, Flora, Gluckstadt, Madison and Ridgeland. Each city will enter into an interlocal agreement with the county, have the work done, pay the contractor who does the work and then be reimbursed by the county after providing the bills and proof of payment, Bryan said.
Gerald Steen, president of the board of supervisors, said the work is estimated to cost $6.65 million.
In recent years, the supervisors have funded “$5 plus million” annually in road maintenance, he said.
In addition to the funded road plan, Madison County also has a $250 million, long-term transportation plan the board approved in May 2024.
