The Millsaps women’s tennis team’s historic season continued on Thursday, May 13 as the Majors dispatched Northwestern-St. Paul, 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament at the UTD Tennis Complex at the University of Texas at Dallas.
Millsaps (11-3) claimed its first victory in the NCAA Tournament in the program’s first national appearance.
The theme of early leads continued as the Majors came out swinging with a 3-0 edge over Northwestern-St. Paul (15-6) in doubles. Incredibly, Millsaps improved its mark to 27-0 on the season for paired contests in conference or postseason matches.
Southern Athletic Association Tournament MVP Maggie Dabadie teamed up with junior Morris Kelly Clayton for an opening 8-3 winner on vourt 2. The duo moved to 9-0 on the season.
Millsaps continued to pad its lead with identical 8-3 scores on vourts 1 and 3. SAA Player of the Year Grace Gaskins paired up with SAA Newcomer of the Year Camille Fremaux at No. 1, while Marissa Brown competed alongside Ella Shields at No. 3. Gaskins/Fremaux (9-0) and Brown/Shields (8-0) also remained unbeaten in the event.
Gaskins, who qualified for the NCAA Women’s Tennis Individual Championship in singles, continued to own Court 1. She defeated Mafee Rinta of UNW, 6-0, 6-1 to move to 9-0 in singles.
Fremaux closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep on Court 3 to improve to 7-0. The remaining courts saw the Majors claim the first set as the match was clinched.
Millsaps will now face Southwestern University in the decond tound on Friday, May 14. First serve was scheduled for 2 p.m. CT and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
