Mr. and Mrs. Forest Woods Whatley Jr. of Birmingham announce the engagement of their daughter, Ann McQueen Whatley, to Joseph Montgomery Upton, son of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Carey Upton Jr. of Jackson.
Miss Whatley is the granddaughter of Dr. Leland Hull Jr. and the late Ann Turner Hull of Birmingham and the late Mr. and Mrs. Forest Woods Whatley Sr. of Opelika, Ala. Dr. Upton is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Roderick Seal Russ III of Ridgeland and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Carey Upton Sr. of West Point.
The bride-elect is a 2017 graduate of Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham. She earned a bachelor’s degree in dietetics and nutrition from the University of Mississippi’s Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College in 2021. While at Ole Miss, she served on the rush team for Delta Delta Delta sorority and was an active member of RUF. As an aspiring nurse, she began her graduate degree at Vanderbilt University‘s nurse practitioner program in May of 2022. She graduated with a dual degree in May of 2025 and is certified as a family nurse practitioner and nurse midwife. She will be associated with Women OB in Nashville in September.
The prospective bridegroom is a 2017 graduate of Jackson Preparatory School. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Mississippi’s Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College in 2021 with a degree in biochemistry. While at Ole Miss, he served as Derby Days chair for Sigma Chi fraternity and participated in RUF. He received his Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry in May of 2025. He is associated with Spring Hill Modern Dentistry in Spring Hill, Tenn. and will start in August.
The couple will exchange wedding vows July 19 at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, with a reception following at The Country Club of Birmingham.
