The city of Jackson is working to update its traffic calming ordinance, which would give neighborhood options to help slow speeding vehicles.
That’s what Jordan R. Hillman, director of Planning and Development for the city of Jackson, said during a community meeting conducted via Zoom about the Greater Eastover Neighborhood Foundation’s plans for five public access gates.
Within the next few months, the city plans to provide guidance for neighborhoods about traffic calming options, how to implement them and assistance with the process, she said.
The issue of speeding vehicles and whether gating would slow them was raised during the community meeting.
Hillman believes it takes more than a gate to reduce speeding in a neighborhood. “A gate will slow you down at a single point,” she said.
She named solar-powered digital displays that alert drivers if they’re going over the speed limit as a useful tool.
The digital display that is installed on Eastover Drive is especially helpful to her, Hillman said.
“It’s gotten my personal attention on many days when I was driving way too fast for being in a neighborhood and didn’t even realize it,” she said.
