On Thursday, October 18, Jackson Area Federal Credit Union joined with credit unions all over the world to celebrate the history and success of the “People-not-Profit” philosophy. As with tradition, the third Thursday in October is International Credit Union Day. This year’s celebration marked the 70th anniversary of the celebration that is International Credit Union Day.
Credit Unions work better together. In October of each year, participating credit unions in Mississippi join forces with the Mississippi Credit Union Association (MSCUA) and volunteer at U.S. Congressman Bennie Thompson’s College and Career Fair in Greenville. MSCUA’s and the participating credit unions of Mississippi take part in offering college and career fair attendees a glimpse into “reality” with a “Reality Fair.” Students choose a job and then visit the different stations such as housing, transportation, food, clothing and then temptations such as entertainment, salon and beauty, pets, etc. “This is a real wake up call for a lot of students who don’t grasp the concept of how much it costs to live and provide for your family in reality,” said Cheryl Oggs, MSCUA vice president.
How can being a member of a credit union help you in your current financial status and financial future? Credit Unions are known for lower loan rates, higher dividends on savings and charging lower fees. In the summer of 2018, Jackson Area Federal Credit Union kicked off its Auto Rate Saver Refi promotion. The promotion boasts a 1 percent discount on JAFCU’s already low competitive rates and a 1 percent cash back of the loan amount in the member’s pocket. Thus, resulting in refinancing over $1.4 million in auto loans and saving members over $300,000 in loan interest collectively.
“Many credit union members fall prey to the car dealers and end up financing their vehicle through the manufacturer or a bank. We encourage our members and prospective members to come in and get pre-approved before going to the car dealer. We offer a fully protected auto loan package that will fit your budget and give you peace of mind,” stated Gary Fairley, JAFCU president/CEO.
