Prep, MRA land top positions in football playoffs

By ANTHONY WARREN,

High school football playoffs start this week, and the Northside promises to be well represented.

Six teams had already clinched postseason berths, while three others were still on the bubble.

Madison Ridgeland Academy (MRA) and Jackson Prep had clinched the first and second seeds in the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools AAAA, Division 1 playoffs, while Jackson Academy had earned the third seed.

MRA (10-0, 5-0) earns the top spot, going undefeated on the season, while Prep (10-1, 4-1) was awarded the number two spot. By virtue of their seeds, both teams have bye weeks.

JA (8-2, 3-2), will face off against Presbyterian Christian (1-10, 0-5) in the first round, Friday at 7 p.m.

In the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Madison Central, Germantown and St. Joseph Catholic School had earned playoff spots, while St. Andrew’s Episcopal School and Ridgeland High School still had to win out on the schedule.

With one district game remaining, the Madison Central Jaguars are 7-3 overall and 4-2 in Class 6A, Region 2.

The Jaguars are currently third in the district and have one final matchup this season, against Region 2 opponent Greenville.

Greenville is 1-9 on the season and in last place.

Win or lose, the Jags are likely in the Class 6A playoffs, according to MHSAA spokesman Todd Kelly.

Typically, the top four teams in the region earn playoff berths. If Madison Central wins, they’ll be alone in third place. A loss could place them in a tie for fourth.

In Class 5A, Region 2, the Germantown Mavericks are also a lock for postseason play having  compiled a 5-1 district record.

Overall, the Mavericks are 6-4 and face one final matchup on Friday, against  Region 2 rival Ridgeland High, according to Maxpreps.

A win for Ridgeland this weekend could give the Titans a second consecutive postseason appearance under coach Ryan Earnest.

The Titans are 5-5 overall and 2-4 in district play, currently tied for fourth in region play, and have to win out to make the playoffs.

While Ridgeland had to win out, St. Joseph Catholic School had clinched a postseason bid.

On Friday, the Bruins will take on Bogue Chitto in the first round of the Class 2A, Region 6 playoffs, according to Maxpreps.

St. Joe has compiled a 6-6 overall record and finished third in the district, with a 2-3 record against region opponents.

MHSAA Class 2A playoffs begin Friday, November 2, at 7 p.m. Class 5A and 6A start on Friday, November 9, also at 7 p.m.

MAIS matchups begin Friday, November 2, also at 7 p.m.
