The state has averaged more than 200 cases of coronavirus a day, since the state reopened on June 1.
On June 8, the state reported 498 new cases of COVID-19, including 20 new deaths. Total number of cases reported across the state were 17,768. Of that, 13,456 people have recovered.
State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said he is seeing a growth in the number of cases among younger people, who are acting like the threat is over.
Gov. Tate Reeves said the outbreak is not over, even though cable and national news outlets are moving on.
“You might be led to believe that coronavirus is over. I’m here to tell you that in our state, COVID-19 is not over,” he said. “We know the things that Dr. Dobbs is asking you to do will work. We know if you’ll stay six feet apart, it will work. We know if you wear a mask and stay six feet apart, it’s better than staying six feet apart.”
Dobbs urged residents to continue wearing masks and practice social distancing. He said if 80 or 90 percent of residents wore masks, the state would be in a “much better place.”
Reeves and Dobbs were worried about hospitals being able to meet capacity, as the number of cases remain stable and the number of people seeking elective surgeries increase.
