Northsiders who thought they could give up wearing a mask on August 3 can think again.
Today, Gov. Tate Reeves extended his safe return order through 8 a.m., August 17. He also amended an executive order requiring residents in more counties to wear facemasks. The city of Jackson, Hinds and Madison counties have been under a mask mandate for several weeks, as cases in the metro area spike.

Meanwhile, today was another grim day for the state, as several more COVID-19 milestones were reached. Among them, the state had the highest total number of one-day cases reported since the beginning of the outbreak, with 1,775 new cases and 48 deaths.
Statewide, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases sits a 56,770, with another 809 probable cases, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health. Confirmed deaths through 6 p.m. July 29 sit at 1,570, with another 41 deaths likely linked to COVID.
Hinds County has surpassed the 5,000 mark, with 5,001 infections reported, with 97 deaths. Madison County's case total sits at 2,221, with 50 deaths.
