Work is underway on the 16,402-square-foot expansion of the Colony Crossing Kroger in Madison.
Director of Community Development for the city of Madison Kianca Stringfellow said Kroger is expanding its current 324,000-square-foot store by 15,191 square feet on the north and 1,272 square feet on the south.
An entire interior renovation will be done to the existing store. Once the project is completed, the store will offer new products, quick serve meals, a new decor package and wider aisles.
“The northern area was an upstairs bay that had been used as storage,” Stringfellow said. “That area will be lowered to the current store’s finished floor elevation.”
The new space will allow for the expansion of the meat and prepared food area.
“The goal is to add a variety of prepared meals and meats that can be taken home and warmed in the oven for convenience,” Stringfellow said.
The southern expansion will include offices, a conference room and a new break room. The pharmacy drive-through is expanding from one lane to two lanes to accommodate the volume of pharmacy customers and alleviate traffic congestion at that corner.
A tiered seating area and outdoor patio will be built outside the northern expansion area.
“There will also be outdoor seating for those who want to eat their meals outdoors,” Stringfellow said. “All of this was planned pre-COVID-19, of course. So there may be changes to the original floor plan for a short while to accommodate distancing and health regulations.”
According to the project description that was submitted to the city last year from civil engineer Cara Martin, the project will also include “updating the screening fence along the southeast corner of the building to better hide the back of house items from the store as well as the existing generator, transformer and refrigeration house.”
