New mixed-use development planned for Madison featuring businesses and housingBy NIKKI ROWELL,
Work will soon be under way on a new mixed-use development in Madison, which is designed to have the feel of a historic downtown neighborhood.
The Village at Madison will be located off Main Street near the police department and will be home to the newest Half Shell Oyster House location.
The entire development will be 18.5 acres. Approximately 10 acres of that will be commercial, with restaurants, retail and office space.
The developer, Mark Castleberry with Castle Properties, said everything from the large trees and landscaping to it being a pedestrian-friendly area will give the development its downtown vibe.
While the development has garnered interest from other businesses looking to open in the Village, Castleberry said the only one set in stone at this time is Half Shell.
“We have had some other activity, but the only one we can publicly discuss is Half Shell,” Castleberry said. “It sets a wonderful tone for the rest of the development.”
The Village will be comprised of nine buildings, with Half Shell occupying one of them. The restaurant will be 6,500 square feet and is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2020.
Castleberry said residents will begin seeing some clearing and construction getting under way in the next 60 to 90 days. He said they are far enough along in the approval process with the city to file for a building permit.
As for the other eight acres available on the property, Castleberry said they are planning a residential development.
They have planned for 46 zero lot line homes designed after the architecture of the Garden District in New Orleans.
However, they have just begun the approval process with the city.
The Village will be an all brick development that Castleberry said will provide the perfect transition between the large stores on Crawford and the historic downtown of Madison.
The goal is a pedestrian-friendly area with shops and restaurants all within walking distance of one another.
Castleberry said he hopes people will come out to the Village to shop and eat out, but he hopes it will be more than that.
“I want it to be a place that you go to shop and eat, but also just a nice place to go for a walk on a nice evening,” Castleberry said.
