Over the last four years, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi’s Team Blue employee volunteers have partnered with Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Capital Area (HFHMCA) to build homes on Smith Robinson Street. This year, Team Blue is building an eighth home and it’s the first in the historic Broadmoor neighborhood, as part of a Covenant Build project between the two organizations. HFHMCA’s focus over the next five years will include rehabs and new home builds in the neighborhood.
Team Blue employee volunteers provide 100 percent of the volunteer labor over the course of eight Saturdays through the end of October. HFHMCA’s construction staff lead volunteers through the building process and the homeowner works alongside the Team Blue volunteers as well.
“Habitat for Humanity continues to transform communities, neighborhoods and people’s lives,” said Courtney Grimes, Public Relations Specialist with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi. “We’re excited to be a part of Habitat’s efforts in revitalizing the Broadmoor community, and we look forward to a continued partnership.”
“This is our eighth Habitat house sponsored by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi,” said Merrill McKewen, Executive Director of HFHMCA. “Their continued partnership, along with the countless hours their employees have volunteered, is a testament to the commitment this company has to improving the quality of life in the communities it serves. We are grateful to have their support as we invest together in the lives and health of families and communities.”
The Team Blue community service program provides opportunities for employees to work together on a variety of community service projects throughout the year. Employees collectively volunteered more than 4,000 hours of donated time in 2018 to a number of organizations and events in the metro area and across Mississippi.
