The city of Ridgeland is on the grow.
This is evidenced by the increase in both commercial and residential developments over the past two years.
“We continue to see strong growth here in the city of Ridgeland,” said Mayor Gene McGee. “I believe that’s because we are proactive in continuing to get quality development here. I think what makes the city attractive to others is the low tax rate and high quality of services we offer.”
McGee said that he believes the quality of life offered in the city is what attracts new commercial and residential opportunities.
The city issued 70 permits for residential developments throughout fiscal year 2016-17. Fiscal year 2017-18 saw a jump to 81 permits issued for residential developments in the city.
Those numbers do not include the 154 residential and 70 non-residential additions and alterations to structures in the city for fiscal year 2016-17.
The city saw 186 residential and 84 non-residential additions and alterations to structure in the city for fiscal year 2017-18.
“The renovations are a big part of growth,” said Alan Hart, the director of Community Development. “A new build is often just the shell of a building. The interior build out of the actual business is considered a renovation in the permit world, so you can see the importance. We typically look at the bottom line values to gauge growth.”
The city has also seen an increase in the number of permits issued for commercial developments.
There were 12 more permits issued for commercial developments in fiscal year 2017-18, which came to a total of 21 for that year.
The previous year, there were nine permits issued for commercial developments.
“We are certainly excited about continued economic growth,” Hart said. “The Mayor and Board continue to remain committed to keeping taxes low through supporting economic growth that benefits our city through the products and services they offer to our community.”
Hart said that major construction projects, such as Northpark Mall, Horne CPA and the various phases of Renaissance are big commitments by their respective developers.
“We have the utmost respect and appreciation for this investment in Ridgeland,” Hart said.
“We have great employees that do a great job for the city,” McGee said. “We are a great place to live and do business.”
