Madison police say a woman who was hit by an intoxicated driver recently has passed away.
Meanwhile, the driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash, Harrison Little, 29, of Dallas, is being housed in the Madison County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond.
On the afternoon June 10, Betty Simmons Ross, 58, of Jackson, succumbed to injuries she sustained in a crash earlier that morning.
At around 4:43 a.m., police responded to an accident with injuries at the intersection of U.S. Highway 51 and Hoy Road.
While proceeding to the location officers received information that one of the drivers had fled the scene in his vehicle.
Officers were able to quickly locate and stop this vehicle on Madison Parkway and detain the driver.
Probable cause was also developed that indicated the driver that fled was impaired. He was subsequently arrested and transported to the Madison Police Department, according to a news release.
Meanwhile at the original accident scene, the driver of the other vehicle involved was attended to and extricated from her vehicle by Madison Fire/Rescue personnel and police officers. She was transported by Pafford ambulance to the University of MS Medical Center with serious injuries. There were no passengers in either vehicle involved in the accident.
Information received from witnesses indicated that a 2015 Nissan Altima was stopped southbound on Highway 51 at the traffic signal at the intersection with Hoy Road at which time it was struck from behind by a 2014 Toyota Camry which was traveling southbound. The driver of the Camry then fled the scene in his vehicle and was subsequently arrested by officers on Madison Parkway.
The driver of the Camry who was arrested was identified as Little. He was initially charged with Aggravated Driving Under the Influence and Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Injuries.
The men and women of the Madison Police Department extend their condolences as well as their thoughts and prayers to the family, friends and co-workers of Ms. Ross.
