Sara Stevens Hazard and William Hunter Hastings were united in holy matrimony on the evening of March 2 at the Oxford University United Methodist Church in Oxford. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wyatt Hazard of Jackson. She is the granddaughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Mark Gordon Hazard of West Point and the late Mr. and Mrs. John Edward O’Connell of Prentiss. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William David Hastings of Greenwood, S.C. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Hastings, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Edward Colcolough, and the late James Franklin Hastings, also of Greenwood.
Given in marriage by her father, Sara wore a diamond-white gown fashioned with a fitted bodice and trumpet skirt with an embellished cap sleeve. Her wedding veil was a family heirloom first worn by the bride’s great grandmother in 1920. Purchased in Belgium during World War I, the Chantilly lace veil has been worn by four generations. She carried a bouquet of white and pale pink roses hand tied with silk ribbon.
The ceremony was officiated by The Reverend Brian Sorgenfrei, campus minister with Ole Miss Reformed University Fellowship. Nuptial music was performed by Susan Gaston, cello; Selim Giray, violin; and Anita Ludlow, organ. Helen House Wooley, soloist and close family friend, sang “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us” during the ceremony.
Following the ceremony, guests made the short walk to the reception at the Lyric. Memphis Soul Review performed and led the dance floor in a night of fun and celebration.
On the eve of the wedding, the bridegroom’s parents hosted a rehearsal dinner at the Oxford Country Club, followed by a post-toast celebration with music and dancing later in the evening for the out of town guests.
