Sparks flew, saws buzzed, and welders blazed as hundreds of Mississippi students went head-to-head at the SkillsUSA Championship and Career Expo, showcasing the young construction talent that will help build the state’s future.
Held March 31–April 1 at the Mississippi Trade Mart and hosted by Build Mississippi, the statewide competition brought together the state’s top career and technical education (CTE) students, industry leaders, and employers for one of Mississippi’s largest youth craft competitions. Students from across the state competed in high-demand construction trades including cabinetmaking, carpentry, electrical, masonry, welding, and more.
Working against the clock and under the watchful eye of industry judges, student competitors showcased the hands-on training they have received through their CTE programs. State champions will advance to represent Mississippi at the national SkillsUSA competition in Atlanta later this summer.
“These students represent the future of Mississippi,” said Brent Bean, president of Build Mississippi. “Our state’s infrastructure and economic growth depend on a strong skilled workforce. With more than 100,000 craft professionals needed across Mississippi, events like this help spotlight the talent that will help meet that demand.”
Connecting Students with Employers
Beyond the competition floor, the event also served as a direct pipeline to careers. A Job Fair and Career Expo allowed students to meet face-to-face with construction companies, explore internships and apprenticeships, and learn about full-time opportunities in the industry.
Employers including Thrash Commercial Contractors, Key Constructors LLC, and Yates Construction participated, giving students a firsthand look at real-world career paths.
“When students see what’s possible in construction and hear directly from employers about the opportunities available, it can change perceptions,” said Luke Walker, director of business development at Thrash Commercial Contractors, Inc. “Construction offers competitive pay, meaningful work, and long-term career stability. Events like this help young people see themselves in that future.”
Driving Workforce Development Across Mississippi
Build Mississippi is a statewide workforce development initiative dedicated to promoting careers in construction and strengthening Mississippi’s skilled workforce pipeline. Through partnerships with schools, industry leaders, and workforce organizations, Build Mississippi works to connect students with hands-on training, career opportunities, and real-world pathways into the construction industry.
The organization supports programs and events that highlight the value of skilled trades, encourage students to pursue careers in construction, and help meet the growing demand for craft professionals across the state.
Organizers say the SkillsUSA championship continues to grow each year as demand for skilled trades workers increases across Mississippi. By bringing together students, educators, and employers in one place, the event aims to strengthen the pipeline of talent entering the state’s construction workforce.
For many students, the competition represents more than just a chance to win — it’s a stepping stone toward a career building Mississippi’s communities and infrastructure.
