Northsider Langston Moore encouraged members of the Rotary Club of North Jackson to screen for cancer.
Anyone age 50-80, former smokers and those with a family history of lung cancer should get screened.
A low-dose, 10-second, open environment CT scan can detect lung cancer early, lowering mortality by 20 percent.
UMMC, St. Dominic, St. Dominic Imaging Center in Madison and Baptist do these scans. Screening is covered by insurance.
Northsider Langston Moore, is project manager of the Mississippi Lung Cancer Roundtable, a collaborative of care givers, survivors, clinicians, public health practitioners, cancer centers to address lung cancer.
Their goal is tobacco cessation and screening. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death. Mississippi has a lung cancer rate 17 percent higher the national average. 10-20 percent of lung cancer victims never smoked. Causes of lung cancer are smoking, environmental exposure, exposure to radon. Family history is as big a risk factor as smoking.
