Below is a press release from Insurance.com:
Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney said this week that insured losses from a tornado event in the Mississippi Delta region on March 24 are nearing $100 million and likely to exceed that amount.
Tornadoes are a growing threat. Last month, there were
244 preliminary tornado reports -- more than three times higher than the 1991-2010 March average of 80 tornadoes -- according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center.
But insurance can help those affected.
“Replacement cost coverage on your home insurance can help you rebuild,” says Insurance.com’s managing editor Leslie Kasperowicz, “while the loss-of-use coverage can provide alternate shelter and assistance with living expenses.
Insurance.com, which provides unbiased, expert consumer advice on home, auto and life insurance, just updated its
guide to the types of insurance people need to properly protect themselves from tornado damage. Among the guide’s highlights:
● Replacement-cost insurance protects the ability to rebuild after a tornadic event, even when building materials drive up the costs
● If unable to stay in a house after a disaster, loss-of-use insurance pays for additional living expenses if staying at a hotel and dining out is necessary
● Nearly two-thirds of homes in America are underinsured and many renters don’t realize their landlord’s policy only covers the structure – not their possessions and valuables – when disaster strikes
