Five weeks ago, the New Orleans Saints opened this much-anticipated season by losing at home, 48-40, to division rival Tampa Bay.

The Saints were, in a word, awful. They made Ryan Fitzpatrick look like Joe Montana. They couldn’t get to him, couldn’t cover Bucs receivers, couldn’t tackle, and looked more a pretender than contender.

Another case where anything’s possible

Last Saturday, Alabama trounced Texas A & M for the Crimson Tide’s 136th victory in 11-plus seasons under Nick Saban’s leadership. Bama is 136-20 under Saban, a remarkable 74-13 in the Southeastern Conference. Saban-led Alabama has won five national championships and may well win a sixth this season.

And for now it is just that – a thought or maybe even a theory. But Nick Saban’s latest band of Crimson assassins appears to possess the same fast, physical defense that has been a staple and now an offense that can come at you so many different ways it is dizzying.
