When driving along Highway 51 in Ridgeland lately, you may have noticed a digital sign reading your speed as you drive past. Ridgeland’s Chief of Police Brian Myers said this is a deterrent to speeders.
Myers said they normally place the Traffic Tamer where they have had complaints of speeders or even an uptick in accidents.
“We normally leave the trailer at a location for two weeks,” Myers said. “It actually logs the speed of all the motorists, and it helps us plan for future enforcement in the area.”
Currently, the Traffic Tamer is on Highway 51.
“It seems motorists heading home from work can get up to excessive speed before having to brake hard for stalled traffic northbound on 51 waiting on the traffic lights,” Myers said. “The trailer is there to get them to check up and slow down in hopes to avoid a rear end collision.”
Currently, Ridgeland only owns one of these units so far, but they will move it around into school zones, major thoroughfares and even in a residential area when there is room.
“The trailer has been used throughout our community,” Myers said. “I even check my speed when I encounter the radar trailer. It is a great deterrent to speeders.”
