Garbage collection days will be changing in the City of Ridgeland and parts of Madison County beginning the week of June 20 to help ensure efficiency.
Waste Management made a request to both Madison County Board of Supervisors and Ridgeland’s Board of Aldermen last week to change their garbage days. Ridgeland garbage collection days will be changing to Monday and Thursday for residents North of the Natchez Trace and West of I-55. For residents South of the Natchez Trace and East of I-55, trash collection days will be on Tuesday and Friday.
All residential recycling will be on Wednesday. The goal is to eliminate garbage pick up on Saturday and Wednesday. Those in the county will be notified if their current days will be changing once the routes are finalized.
Waste Management Public Sector Solutions Director David Holloway said they are just like every other company, and it is a very expensive company to operate when one is in the trash business.
“With that being said, we have to think of things that we can make better for ourselves and for the communities we serve,” Holloway said. “We are trying to cut costs because we have to be as efficient as possible. It is that simple. It is our job to be efficient. We quoted rates, and we have to be efficient.”
Waste Management will now be in the county just two days of the week, which will allow for more trucks in the area at one time, which equals more support.
“If we have more trucks in the area, we have immediate support if something were to happen to a truck like we get stuck or a flat tire or anything that can keep us down,” Holloway said. “The word will be gotten out very well. We will be doing social media blasts, and we are here for any support you (the county) need. It says in the contract that from time to time we have to make these changes just to be viable and try to be as efficient as we can.”
Holloway said this will make a better operation for all involved.
“It is really tightening the whole thing up and making it more efficient for y’all,” Holloway said.
As far as county changes go, this is only for the areas outside of city limits with the exception of Gluckstadt.
“It does include the City of Gluckstadt because they are still in our collection program,” County Administrator Shelton Vance said.
