Silas Wood McCharen was welcomed home by Christ on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. Born to Dr. and Mrs. Littleton Lane McCharen on June 6, 1956, in West Point, Mississippi, Silas lived his nearly 69 years to the fullest, savoring every moment and bringing joy into the lives of all who knew and loved him.
A graduate of Indian Springs School, a boarding school in Alabama, Silas came to Jackson to attend Millsaps College where he excelled as a history student. After graduating in 1979, he took his love of history to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History where he worked as an archivist before pursuing his legal career. In 1985, Silas graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Law, where he chaired the Moot Court Board. For nearly four decades, he practiced law with Daniel, Coker, Horton, and Bell in Jackson before retiring in 2022 with plans to spend more time with his grandchildren and travel the world with the love of his life, Leesa.
A modern renaissance man, Silas was fluent in French, a wine connoisseur, an amateur guitarist, a triathlete, a world traveler, and an avid scholar of history, the Bible, and anything he could devour to expand his understanding of this world. He enjoyed the finer things in life-- with an uncanny ability to pinpoint the origin of a wine with a sniff and a sip.
A Francophile, Silas was a longtime member and past president of Alliance Française. He served as Consul Honoraire de France for ten years, bridging the cultures and people of Mississippi and France.
Closer to home, Silas enjoyed his weekly lunches with the Jackson Club as well as the "North Jackson Angry Men." Silas and Leesa enjoyed social clubs in and around town including the B&B Club, the Holiday Dance Club, and the Calliope Club.
He was a friend to many, "Papa" to his precious grandchildren, and an answered prayer to Leesa and their girls.
Silas is survived by his wife, Leesa Crim McCharen; his daughters Meg Lake (Andrew) and Sarah Lloyd Stevenson (Pete), both of Alexandria, Virginia; and his three adoring grandchildren Will, Caldwell, and Palmer Stevenson.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved father- and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Lee Crim.
Visitation will be on Silas's birthday, Friday, June 6, from 1:30 to 3:00 PM at Northminster Baptist Church. A private service for family will follow.
In lieu of flowers, Silas's family asks that friends consider supporting Northminster Baptist Church where he met and married Leesa, where he was baptized, and where their girls were raised, baptized, and married.
