The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released their State Employment and Unemployment Summary for August of 2024.
Unemployment rates were higher in August in 6 states and the District of Columbia, lower in 1 state, and stable in 43 states, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.
Twenty-five states and the District had jobless rate increases from a year earlier, 4 states had decreases, and 21 states had little change.
Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 4 states, decreased in 1 state, and was essentially unchanged in 45 states and the District of Columbia.
Over the year, nonfarm payroll employment increased in 30 states and was essentially unchanged in 20 states and the District.
The current unemployment rate for Mississippi (as of August 2024) stands at 2.7 percent.
For comparison, the unemployment rate for the previous reported month (July 2024) was reported as 2.7 percent.
Mississippi stands at a 0.5 percent decrease from the same point the previous year (August, 2023).
Mississippi's unemployment rate at the beginning of the previous year was 3.9 percent (in January, 2023).
The national unemployment rate currently stands at 4.2 percent.
The national unemployment rate had a 0.1 percentage point drop from the previous month, and is at 0.4 percentage point higher than in August 2023.
Mississippi stands at 2.7 percent (a 1.5 percent decrease from the national unemployment rate).
