Mrs. Sarah Curtis Buckley, 83, of Brandon passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at Olive Grove Terrace at The Arbors in Olive Branch, Miss.
Sarah was born in Memphis to the late James Howard and Martha Anderson Curtis. The family lived once in Columbus then moving to McComb where they resided for years. Sarah was the oldest of five children; Sarah, Sue, Sharon, Sonny, and David. Doc and Martha loved them all equally and although their family of seven didn’t have a lot materially, they did share a lot of love and fun!
Sarah attended Jackson Public Schools and graduated from Provine High School. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Southern Mississippi. Sarah’s life’s work was teaching senior English, Shakespeare, and mythology. She was as fine an educator that God ever made! Her students loved her more than any teacher they ever had during their high school career and she loved every one of her students just as deeply and completely.
Sarah enjoyed her family, her faith, and her friends. She absolutely adored the beach, in particular Destin, and at times expressed that “I would love to be a dolphin.” She and Mel took their two precious children every summer for three entire months, June, July, and August, closing up their home a week after school was over for the summer, only to return home the week before school began in the fall.
Sarah was a wonderful wife for 63 years to Mel Buckley, as well as a loving mother to Bethany and Timothy. She was an avid reader and loved working The New York Times crossword puzzles every day. She enjoyed playing bridge and swimming at the country club. Sarah and Mel lived in Castlewoods for 30 years where they built their home. They traveled abroad in their later years, especially loving England, Ireland, and Scotland.
Sarah was a member of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church in Flowood.
She is survived by her daughter, Bethany Anderson Buckley Bertolet; son, Timothy Andrew Buckley; sister, Sharon Curtis Craig; numerous nieces and nephews and their spouses; as well as four grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, 5049 Lakeland Drive, Flowood, MS 39232.
