Ms. Susan Elaine Karer Garrett of Jackson, MS, formerly of Laurel, passed away on Saturday, October 5 in Jackson.
Ms. Garrett was born on March 3, 1938, in Lancaster, PA, to Mrs. Mary Helen Marrow Karer and Mr. Edward H. Karer. The family moved to Laurel when she was 11 years old.
Ms. Garrett graduated from George S. Gardiner High School in Laurel in 1956. She attended Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. She obtained her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Mississippi.
Ms. Garrett spent many years in Memphis, where she was married to Mr. Louis T. Garrett III and their son Louis T. Garrett IV was born in 1966.
Ms. Garrett began her career as an American Airlines ticket representative, eventually working for Dobbs Management Service in accounting and later for the Heidelberg & Woodliff law firm in Jackson as a paralegal. She found her work very fulfilling.
Upon retirement, Ms. Garrett returned to Laurel where she was a loving caregiver to her parents. Ms. Garrett loved her hometown church, First Presbyterian Church of Laurel, and was active there until her health began to fail. She had a giving spirit and was active in the Meals on Wheels program and as a member of the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art.
Ms. Garrett is survived by her son Louis T. Garrett IV (Sarah Cherry) of Columbus, OH; sister Cynthia "Cindy" Barrow (Chip) of Cedartown, GA; brother Jeffrey Karer (Sammy Moon) of Jackson; nieces Christy LaBrec (David) of Spring Hill, TN and Jennifer Thompson (Todd) of Tega Cay, SC; and four great-nephews. The family will have a private ceremony to celebrate her life.
