Below is a press release from the Mississippi Department of Transportation:
Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) crews have made significant headway on an emergency repair along Interstate 20 westbound/Interstate 55 southbound before State Street in Jackson.
Overnight, crews were able to successfully break out and remove the large chunks of concrete before digging out the saturated soil underneath the roadway that caused the dip. After removing the soupy soil, crews replaced it with crushed stone before placing fresh asphalt on top, smoothing out the affected area of interstate.
While crews have made significant progress in less than 24 hours, there is still work to be done. While the fresh asphalt cools and hardens, MDOT crews are replacing overhead signage during the closure, saving future lane closures from taking place in Jackson. Contractors will continue drilling throughout the day to inspect soil 35 feet below the surface to determine future plans for a permanent repair.
I-20 westbound/I-55 southbound traffic continues being directed to Interstate 55 northbound and Interstate 220 southbound around the closure. Local traffic is encouraged to seek an alternate route using local roads for the remainder of the closure.
Drivers are reminded to plan ahead and allow for additional travel time and to never drive distracted. Remember, even if you’re not traveling around any closures, other roadways in the area will see an uptick in traffic for the remainder of this closure.
