The Garden Club of Madison will present Rooted in Mississippi, a day of inspiration, flavor, and fellowship from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. February 19 at Bridlewood of Madison. The event will include lunch and guest speakers. Landscape designer and television personality Phillip Watson will share his expertise in creating gardens that blend beauty with a sense of place. At noon on Wednesday, February 11, civil rights historian Christina Thomas will present a biographical lecture on Winson Hudson, a lifelong civil rights leader from Harmony, an all-Black rural community in Leake County, as part of the History Is Lunch series. Hudson co-founded the Leake County NAACP in 1962 and served as its president for 38 years. Alongside her sister, Dovie, she helped file the first lawsuit to desegregate public schools in a rural Mississippi county, leading to local school integration in 1964.

The annual Possum Ridge model train exhibit will open at the Two Mississippi Museums on December 2. For more than 40 years, the model trains and the town of Possum Ridge have been a holiday tradition. The site depicts a typical Mississippi railroad town of the 1940s and has been growing and changing since its first year. The Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum will host its annual Homestead for the Holidays event Thursday, December 11, and Friday, December 12, from 5 to 8:00 p.m. Admission is $10 per person for ages three and up. This year’s event will feature breakfast for supper, story time with Mrs. Claus and pictures taken with Santa and Rudolph. The Fortenberry-Parkman Farmstead will offer various agricultural demonstrations, and visitors may stroll through Small Town, Mississippi, to experience Christmas during the early 1920s.
