The House measure would allow licensed business with an alcohol permit to purchase their stock from any willing provider if ABC doesn’t fulfill their order in 5 days. This allowance would be in effect for 2 years.
To address the backlog that has plagued the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control for months, the Mississippi House of Representatives amended a Senate bill last week through a strike-all amendment that would allow licensed and permitted businesses to purchase stock from other avenues when ABC fails to make timely deliveries.

A 22-year-old man is dead following a shooting at a local apartment complex about an hour ago.
Jeffrey Johnson was pronounced dead by paramedics from a gunshot wound, according to Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers. The victim was pronounced dead at 1:25 p.m. in the parking lot of Graystone Apartments on West Second Street.
Jacob Sheriff, interim police chief, said two suspects are in custody for questioning as the investigation continues.

Greenwood Leflore Hospital signed a letter of intent to discuss the possibility of the University of Mississippi Medical Center taking over its services, according to state and local officials and an excerpted document obtained by Mississippi Today.
The public hospital in Greenwood has faced financial struggles for years and warned as recently as December that it was on the brink of closure because of debt owed to the Mississippi Division of Medicaid.

Cate Hargett, an 11-year-old in Greenwood, needs a bone marrow transplant as the search for her perfect donor match continues.
Cate, who dreams of becoming a librarian or author, was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder when she was 2 months old.
The Pillow Academy fifth grader has continued to fight bone marrow failure, which occurs when the tissue inside bones cannot produce enough healthy blood cells on its own.

Election season remains in full swing within our community. With the Yazoo City municipal primary elections behind us, we are now preparing for the general election in April. And voters will return to the polls next week for the state primary elections.
Locally, we can expect some new direction on the Board of Mayor and Aldermen with three new leaders assuming aldermen posts. Ward 4 Alderwoman Elizabeth Thomas will return to her seat. And voters will determine the next leaders within the mayoral and Ward 1 alderman post in April.

City leaders have approved a bid for the highly anticipated exterior wall repair to the historic Triangle Cultural Center.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen accepted three bids in January to begin the renovation project to the center’s exterior wall, which has been in limbo for over five years. The submitted bids ranged from over a million dollars to about $200,000.
Those three bids submitted included:
United Restoration and Preservation, Inc; $1,530,000
The Lathan Company; $489,500
Structural Waterproofing and Restoration, Inc.; $198,000

An engineering firm conducted a site visit at Yazoo City’s central fire station, which collapsed last month with rubble from the historic building falling into Washington Street next to City Hall.
Considering whether renovation or reconstruction of the structure would be the right direction, Waggoner Engineering representatives provided a presentation at a recent Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting.

Yazoo City High School was one of 220 schools from 38 states across the country to receive a $5,000 grant through the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries. This year, the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries awarded over $1 million in library grants.
Many of the libraries will use the funds to update and diversify their collections. The local high school received 337 books thanks to the initiative.

State Rep. Becky Currie aims to review the inmate welfare fund and reduce prison deaths, among other reforms passed by the House.
The Mississippi House of Representatives has inserted language from its measures aimed at improving the wellbeing of inmates into Senate bills after the House bills died.
